Derby Cocktail Tropicál whisk(e)y

From Max Bilgray's Tropic Bar, circa 1950, when Charles Baker printed it in his South American Gentleman's Companion. Like the Mojito, this drink is a Mint Julep with fruit juice. Unlike the Mojito, it doesn't swap the Julep's bourbon for rum -- perhaps because it was created after Repeal, when Kentucky's distilleries were exporting again.

Ingredients

Steps

  • Dissolve sugar in lemon juice. Add other ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into a double Old Fashioned glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with several mint sprigs, Julep-style.
