What a difference a letter makes: Remove the "s" from Virgin Islands, and you have Virgin Island -- the perfect name for a mid-century Tiki drink conjuring male fantasies of a South Sea isle full of virgins, as opposed to a group of ex-slave colonies in the Caribbean. An unpublished recipe from the personal notebook of Ray Buhen, who in 1961 served this drink at his Tiki-Ti bar in Los Angeles.

  of Blended Lightly Aged (Gold) Rum
  (use Virgin Islands rum if available)

  of Lime juice
• 1
  oz
  of Orange juice

  of Sugar syrup (rich) 2 sugar to 1 water
• 0.5
  oz
  of Orgeat Syrup
• 0.5
  oz
  of Soda Water

Steps

• Take with ice cubes. Pour into a tall glass or Tiki mug. Garnish with orange slice and cherry.
