Josephine Baker was an American fan danceer who took Paris by storm in the 1930's, when Sloppy Joe's named the cocktail after her. But she didn't visit Havana until 1950, when the Tropicana's caino profits enabled the club to import her act. With headliners like Baker and Nat "King" Cole, the Tropicana became such a hotspot that in 1956 Cubana Airlines offered a "Tropicana Special": a round trip that left Miami Thursday Evening and returned from Havana at four a.m. the same night -- with an in-flight burlesque show, Bacardi cocktails and conga dancing in the aisle -- followed by dinner and another show at the Tropicana itself. Recipe from the 1931 Sloppy Joe's Bar Cocktails Manual.
